I'm Sorry, Mom

There will be no pictures of a cute little girl in a foofy Spring dress today. The cute little girl did something to the camera and we can't figure out how to fix it.

I married a keeper.

Last night around 02:00AM Emmett started throwing up. I heard him cough (I thought he was just coughing) and cry while I was feeding Matthew. I was half asleep and Richard was still up watching a movie. I heard him go up the stairs and say soothing things to Emmett. I heard bedclothes being stripped from a bed so I got up to investigate. Richard just matter of factly said "Emmett threw up. I cleaned him up. Where is a spare pillow?" While we were chatting Emmett threw up again. Richard then took him downstairs, made a nest on the loveseat for him and made a nest for himself on the couch. Somewhere in there he also started a load of laundry.

Did I mention he cleaned up barf and did laundry at 02:00AM with nary a complaint????

Dear Administrator of our Hospital:

Dear XXXXXXX:

It has been brought to my attention that the hospital has recently stopped letting Moms of preemies room in with their babies for the last 48 hours of their stay. I know this policy was in place to ensure breastfeeding could observed and the Moms could receive guidance from the nurses and the lactation consultant. It was to ensure that breastfeeding was going well and that baby was gaining weight . I also know a room was provided near the NICU so Moms could stay near by. It was also brought to my attention that this room is no longer available and that recently a new Mom who wanted to stay was told she couldn't use the waiting rooms on the floor to be close to her baby.

I just wanted to know if there is any truth to this or if this is all rumors. If it is true, why have you taken that room away? Why are Moms not allowed to stay on the floor to be near their babies? Do you realize how you are endangering the health of these little babies? Do you realize how you are hurting the bond between these new Moms and their precious little ones?

I used to work in your facility. I know how you proclaim yours is a breastfeeding friendly facility and that breastfeeding education is a big part of postpartum care on the maternity floor. (I can't even say how many breastfeeding flow sheets I have filled out or have helped other new moms fill out--too many to count.) I have helped many new Moms get their babies off to the best start possible. That is why I am very confused about this new policy I have heard about. What sort of provisions are going to be made for Moms of preemies who are committed to nursing if they can't have a safe place to practice? Is there another plan in place that you haven't told anyone about? Is this temporary? What is in that room instead? I checked the hospital website and it still promises parents they can room in. Will the website be changed to reflect the truth?

I think it is appalling that on the surface you proclaim to be a breastfeeding friendly facility and then think it is ok to turn your back on the Moms and babies who need the most help.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and answer my questions.

Sincerely,

A Concerned Mother Who Used to be a Nurse in Your Facility

I will be printing out that letter (with real names) and mailing it to my hospital today. What do you think? If you are as upset as I am about this leave me a comment and I will provide an email address for you to voice your own concerns. Hopefully if enough people show their concern the Powers That Be will realize what a horrible mistake they have made.

The great nap debate.

Charlotte is getting to the age where it is harder and harder to get her to lay down for a nap. Yesterday it was impossible. By suppertime she was a basket case and collapsed into bed a full hour and a half earlier than she usually does. She was up at her normal time this morning. I am in the midst of a battle with her to stay in bed as I type this.

I am wondering if I should let her win and keep going with the earlier bed time? Is sacrificing a break for me in the afternoon worth my while to have more adult time in the evening?

Six Months Already???

Guess who is six months old today?

My sweet little Matthew is growing up so fast. He is so curious about the world and now that he has figured out how to make his hands work, everything in his reach is grabbed, examined, and tasted . He rolls and is trying to crawl. He is working on cutting his third tooth. He loves his bath and hates his socks. He greets the world every morning with a big grin on his face. His giggle is infectious and his sparkling blue eyes are beguiling.

His siblings are starting to notice he is kind of fun to hang out with and readily play with him now. He loves to cuddle and his favourite place to be at night is snuggled up with me so he can grab a snack whenever he might need it. He is getting really good at helping himself at night so I barely wake up when he wants to nurse now!!

Spring Fever

I think I have Spring Fever. I keep looking around my house and am getting very tired of the white walls. It is time to shake things up.

I see purple in my front entranceway. Bright green in my livingroom, taupe in my diningroom and sunny buttery yellow in my kitchen.

Lucky for me, Richard has no opinion. All I have to do is give him a paintbrush.

What do we do with the kids????
